Mayka McCalla
Global Vice President of Learning and Talent Management, and Organizational Development
In 2012, Mayka was named Vice President of Human Resources for the Mexico, Central America, and the Caribbean (MCAC). In this role, she has partnered with leaders across the region to increase AES people’s trust in the workplace, their pride in their jobs and their passion to live our values and purpose. Under her leadership, all five MCAC markets have been certified and ranked by the Great Place To Work® Institute for seven consecutive years and in 2020 MCAC even gained an average of five points in its countries despite the challenges of a global pandemic. Since 2018, Mayka has overseen an increase in the hiring of women in MCAC from 15% to 16.4% per year and opportunities for women to be promoted to leadership positions so that today 21% of MCAC leaders are women.
Since joining AES in 2006, Mayka has actively participated in the recruitment, development and retention of talent for the region and for critical projects that are transforming the sector including the Colon LNG power plant and terminal in Panama, the Eastern Pipeline in the Dominican Republic, and new renewables across all MCAC markets. As part of AES’ All together value, Mayka designed the AEStarformers initiative, mixing team building with learnings about people, diversity, behaviors and engagement around strategy and key business objectives. She also lead the MCAC wellness digital program and oversaw the certification of all AES businesses in Panama for Work and Life Balance from the Instituto the Capital Social Europeo.
For the past fifteen years, Mayka has helped create and ensure a responsible, fun, and caring work environment for our people. Recently, she was invited to lead the AES Global Learning and Development Center of Excellence and has created learning journeys, programs and resources for the development of AES people skills in topics such as innovation, digital and wellness. Together with her team and global colleagues, she also launched Workday Learning across AES to offer a cohesive and scalable learning experience with consistent governance, processes, and technology, all while addressing the unique development needs of our diverse people while empowering them to develop to their fullest potential.
Mayka was born in Panama and holds a master’s degree in human resources and Finance from Universidad Latina de Ciencia y Tecnología in Panama, a bachelor’s degree in psychology from Universidad de Panamá and certifications in executive business and leadership from ADEN Business School, University of Virginia Darden School of Business and Georgetown Business School. Mayka has an entrepreneurial degree from San Francisco University and she is also a certified coach from ICC.
Mayka loves to spend time with her family. She is also very close to her friends. in her spare time, she loves to cook, meditate, go to the movies and teach others. Prior to AES, Mayka worked for almost eight years in the Cement Industry.
