In AES Panama, safety and the environment is everyone’s commitment.
This is why AES Panama upholds a Safety, Occupational Health and Environment Integrated Policy. This policy presents AES Panama’s intentions and commitments as an organization related to environmental performance, and occupational health and safety risk control, and it is annually revised by management.
Consequently, AES Panama has established and Integrated Management System which presents proper tools for its compliance while providing training and awareness in environmental and safety issues.
AES Panama’s Integrated Management System applies to the environmental aspects over which the company has control and influence, as well as safety and occupational health hazards during the electricity generation process.
The system encompasses all administrative, operational and maintenance activities related to electricity generation processes occurring at the Bayano, La Estrella, Los Valles and Esti hydroelectric plants. These include water harvesting and conduction, reservoirs, powerhouse operational processes and electricity generation.
Hydroelectric plants do not generate Co2 and the water used to generate energy return to its course without chemical alterations, thus continuing its natural cycle, therefore, they do not pollute air or water.
Even though electricity generation processes in hydroelectric plants do not involve the use of chemicals or other substances, discharge waters in AES plants are monitored regularly to measure traces of hydrocarbons, oil and fats, pH, coliform bacteria, biochemical oxygen demand, temperature and turbidity, as established by norm 35-2000 issued by the Panamanian Commission of Industrial and Technical Norms (COPANIT).
